US Senator Says Trump's NATO Exit Threat Reckless

(MENAFN) Senior Democratic Senator Mark Warner of Virginia sounded the alarm Wednesday over President Donald Trump's signals that he may pull the United States out of NATO, cautioning that such a move would deal a severe blow to American national security while handing a strategic victory to rivals Russia and China.

"What the president is proposing would shatter decades of bipartisan American leadership, undermine our credibility with allies, and embolden adversaries like Russia and China who would welcome nothing more than a fractured transatlantic alliance," Warner said in a formal statement.

The Virginia senator mounted a forceful defence of the 75-year-old alliance, declaring that "For more than seventy years, NATO has been the cornerstone of American national security," and characterising it as "the most successful military alliance in modern history."

Warner pulled no punches in condemning Trump's threat, branding it "reckless" and "dangerous," and warning it would "play directly into the hands of our adversaries."

Pushing back against assertions that NATO disproportionately benefits Europe at Washington's expense, Warner pointed to the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, when allied nations invoked the alliance's collective defence clause and deployed troops to Afghanistan in solidarity with the United States. "To now suggest that this alliance is a one-way street is not only wrong – it's an insult to those sacrifices," he said.

Warner's rebuke followed Trump's public criticism of NATO allies for declining to back the ongoing U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, after which the president openly threatened to withdraw from the bloc. In a sit-down interview with The Telegraph, Trump dismissed the alliance as a "paper tiger" and stated that pulling out is "beyond reconsideration."

The rift has been further exposed by the broader conflict in the Middle East, where the majority of NATO member states have refused to participate in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a critical artery for global oil supplies severely disrupted by the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran — choosing instead to press for diplomatic de-escalation.
