I-64 HRBT westbound opens early following completion of repaving

NORFOLK/HAMPTON — The I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) reopened westbound toward Hampton ahead of schedule Sunday morning, Oct. 11, following completion of repaving work in the westbound tunnel.

Crews worked Friday night through Saturday to complete milling, paving and pavement markings in the remaining westbound travel lane. Combined with the work completed during the first closure weekend Oct. 2-3, repaving is now complete in both westbound travel lanes.

With westbound paving complete, VDOT reopened the HRBT at approximately 3:00 a.m., restoring this key regional connection for motorists for the remainder of the weekend and well ahead of the Monday morning commute.

Next, crews are scheduled to shift to the eastbound HRBT toward Norfolk, with up to two planned weekends of full directional closures for repaving:

  • Friday, Oct. 16 at 9 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 19 at 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 30 at 9 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 2 at 5 a.m.*

*A second eastbound closure weekend will be used if needed to allow the contractor to complete any remaining work in that direction.

During the eastbound closures, the westbound HRBT toward Hampton will remain open. The paving work is weather- and schedule-dependent, and schedule adjustments may be necessary. Additional designated backup weekends may be used Nov. 6-9 and Nov. 13-16, if needed.

Any updates to the closure schedule will be shared through VDOT's official channels, including the VDOT.Virginia.gov/HRBTclosures project webpage and VDOT Hampton Roads District social media channels on Facebook, X.

Before traveling, motorists should also check VDOT's 511Virginia website and mobile app for the latest closure and traffic information. Third-party navigation apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze may not reflect the most up-to-date closure information.
